Assaulting Corn Stalks
Toughest Tillage Trials!

May 10, 2011 — Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show Showcases Tillage Equipment And How They Attack Corn Stalks.
According to Ontario Certified Crop Advisor, Patrick Lynch, today’s corn stalks are harder to deal with than the corn stalks of 10 to 15 years ago. Today’s hybrids have more mass. There’s more of them. And today’s hybrids have more lignin.
So, over the three days of Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show this September, Lynch will oversee eighteen pieces of tillage equipment that will showcase their ability to take on tough corn stover and its higher lignin content. This extra lignin helps corn plants stand better but can sometimes be an issue if farmers are keen to start early spring planting.
“Today’s corn stalks are harder to deal with than corn of ten years ago,” says Lynch. “Today’s hybrids have more mass than the hybrids of past decades. If these corn stalks are left untouched, the soil will take longer to dry out in the spring. This is not helping growers who want to plant soybeans earlier now than ten years ago.”
Lynch suggests working these stalks into the soil in the fall. This allows the ground to dry out faster in the spring to allow for earlier planting. Mixing this corn stover into the topsoil reduces erosion. In fact, many believe this type of tillage is more effective in reducing erosion than no–till.
Choosing the right tillage equipment is an important step to handling corn stover. Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show has invited eighteen companies to “take off the gloves” and attack the challenge head–on by showing farmers what the marketplace has to offer. Moderated by Pat Lynch, attendees will watch the following companies tackle corn stover side–by–side in the Southwest Demo Field:
