Canada's Outdoor Farm Show

A first for Canada, Monsanto will feature their “Roadmap to Success,” by showcasing nine technologies not available on the market. A Stress Mitigation Tent will demonstrate the effectiveness of stacking traits under simulated dry-weather conditions, plus other value-enhanced crops. Tour dates and times can be pre-arranged by calling 1-800-285-1281 or booked at the Monsanto exhibit.

Farmers can look AND drive tractors from each of the major manufacturers to “shop and compare” various technologies. Pre-qualified growers can put 3 power-categories through a driving obstacle course, experiencing features and benefits for themselves. (Administered by Oxford County Farm Safety Association).

The Lely Voyager automatic grazing system will be shown for the first time in North America. With two solar-powered, self-propelled and GPS-guided robots, it eliminates the need to move fencing for optimal grazing. Solar-powered fencing from Kane and Gallagher will be featured, while the Kelln Solar Pump will move water over 2,000 ft. to paddocks.

Requirements for IP (Identity-Preserved) cropping means producers have to know approved ways to clean combines to maintain varietal integrity. A workshop, lead by Dr. Mark Hanna from Iowa State University, with input from Ontario IP experts, will investigate the issues using major brands of combines.

To enhance the biosolids land applications, Terratec has set up a demo plot to show the cost-effective use of biosolids to compliment commercial fertilizers, as well as showing the cost benefits of heat dried biosolid pellets that are certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

More and more farmers are getting involved in doing their own on-farm ag construction. From buildings to road repairs – from foundations to fencing – the demand for construction equipment on the farm is growing. This year, Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show will be offering an Ag Construction Expo, where different manufacturers can put their equipment through the paces and demonstrate exactly how it can be used. Located near the new pond at the southeast corner of the Show site, this exciting “hands-on” Expo will bring out the contractor in every farmer.

The growing popularity of the “Local Foods” movement amongst consumers and the hospitality/tourism industry means that some farm families might be rethinking the benefits of this type of diversification. The new Local Foods Expo, amalgamated with the former Organics and Eco Expos, will help to answer questions from producers who want more information on how to market to this significant consumer audience.

In response to demand for heifers trained on robotic milkers, the demonstration herd at the Show will be auctioned at noon on Thursday, September 11, in the Lely Innovation Centre, using electronic RFID tags and hand-held reading and recording devices to keep bidders informed on pedigree & milking data.
